BJI Newsletter, Sept. 2008, #104
A WORD FROM HENRY
Our main focus in this newsletter each month is, of course, on blackjack.
But, we are realists and know that many advantage blackjack players also like
to play other games where it's feasible to get the edge. So we periodically
write about other casinos games where it's mathematically possible to do so.
For example, in last month's BJI, we had a ground-breaking article on how to
get the edge on specific slot machines.
This month, we've got the skinny on how to get the edge playing
jacks or
better video poker games (courtesy of Jean Scott, who will be writing a
"Jean Scott on Video Poker" column bi-monthly in BJI); how to get an
edge in roulette (courtesy of Laurance Scott, a well-known professional
roulette player); how to get the
edge playing Texas Hold'em by poker pro
Bill Burton (Bill's column this month is on how to size up a game);
and a teaser on
dice control from Frank Scoblete (see below for details).
On the blackjack side of things, Joe Pane visited
Costa Rica and gives
us a glimpse of the blackjack playing conditions including some unique
"casino heat;" Alan Krigman discusses the pros (and cons) of
spreading
to two spots when you play blackjack; Frank Scoblete and his team of
reporters provide the update on the current state of the blackjack games
in each casino in
Atlantic City (and they are getting worse); The Babe
describes his adventure
trying to win a million bucks in a recent
blackjack tournament; and million dollar tournament winner Sammy Vaughn
provides a glimpse of what it was like in
Sin City circa 1958 when he
first came to town at the tender age of 18 (with the goal of
"just wanting to drink beer and getting laid"). We also have our usual
schedule of upcoming major
blackjack tournaments courtesy of
www.blackjacktournaments.com.
What would you say if THE Playboy magazine contacted you and said they
wanted to do a story about your gambling prowess? That's exactly what
occurred with BJI writer Frank Scoblete ... a Playboy magazine writer
wanted to do a story on dice control, and who best to contact but Frank,
and his partner the Dominator. Read Frank's article,
Playboy Magazine Wanted Me!, for the details, and then make a mental note
to get the October issue of Playboy magazine (on sale beginning Sept. 9)
to read the article Shoot-Out in Vegas - Meet the Five Horsemen.
I will be teaching another
Golden Touch Blackjack course the weekend of
October 18/19 in Las Vegas. You'll learn Speed Count, the Optimum Basic
Playing Strategy, conservative and aggressive betting, bankroll and risk
and ruin, and lots more. This is a hands-on course; over 50% of the time
will be spent practicing in our simulated casino. Class size is limited;
only a few spots remain. BJI subscribers get a $100 discount.
This is our last class in 2008. For more information call 1-866-946-2521.
Many of you know that I've been a contributing writer for Casino Player
magazine for over 20 years, and currently I write their Total 21 column each month.
Under the management of Editor-in-Chief Adam Fine, I've watched the magazine
grow to become the most successful publication for casino players of all time.
Unfortunately, Adam recently suffered a brain aneuyrysm and stroke,
and he passed away on 8/25/08. He was only 39 years old. Ironically,
the last email I received from Adam was a request for his
BJI password (which he misplaced). May he rest in peace.
On a more cheerful note, my father-in-law is living proof that you
are never too old to learn video poker. My wife and I celebrated his
recent 90th birthday with an overnight stay at a casino in Biloxi,
and would you believe he hit not one, but two royal flushes in 24 hours.
Oh, and by the way, he was also dealt a royal flush just three
weeks ago (at 650,000 to 1 odds). That's three royals in three weeks.
Not bad for someone with two children, four grandchildren and four
great grandchildren! (BTW: He plays the same video poker game
that Jean Scott describes in
her article in this issue of BJI).

"Some blackjack buffs enjoy playing multiple spots simultaneously. Their explanations for playing more than one spot has to do with things like, "you get more action," or "you make more on hot shoes," or "wins on one side can offset losses on the other when the game is cold," or "you change the flow of the cards, which may turn a losing shoe into a winner." I'll explain the facts (pros and some cons) of spreading to two spots..."

"I was recently invited on a junket to Costa Rica by Max Rubin,
who is the master of ceremonies for the famous Blackjack Ball. The invitation was for the Horseshoe Casino, which is located in San Jose, Costa Rica. I did some things that I've never done before that made me feel like a kid..."

"Most Advantage Players scoff at the idea that anyone can beat the game of Roulette; however, many people have been doing just that for decades. For those of you unfamiliar with the methods to beat the game, here is a short primer..."

"I call Jacks or Better (JoB) the "vanilla" video poker game. It's the most basic "flavor," because it was the first video poker game to appear in casinos, and all other VP games were developed from this original with at least some of its basic elements. I recommend this game with the "classic" 9/6 schedule (the one-coin payoff for the full house/flush), because it is the best game for a beginner to learn, and also for a more experienced player to have in his repertoire of VP skills..."

"I got the email from a Playboy writer Steve Talty, author of Empire of the Blue Water, who wanted to do a feature story on me and on my partner the Dominator for the magazine. He had read about our casino exploits, done some insider investigations, and realized this would make a great article, and that Dom and I were the people to go to..."

"In this article, I will examine the final hand at my quarter final table at a Winstar monthly qualifier. With this format, the semi-finals are more like the finals because one winner of each table in the semi's (total of 30 players) advances to the final tournament, which is a bigger win than the opportunity to play for the $100,000 prize fund in the monthly finals. As the quarter final win gets you to that semi final table, it too is a sweet hurdle to overcome..."

"In 1958, several things happened that changed Las Vegas once again. Yes, even after
'55 when they overbuilt this little town with four new casinos, including the Riviera which was the first high rise building on the Las Vegas Strip (aka Los Angles Highway), more things were still being added to Sin City..."

"When I play Texas Holdem, if I get seated in an established game, I never play my first seven hands unless I am in the blind, or I have a strong hand that I can raise with. I do this for two reasons. First , I want to establish an image of a tight player, but more importantly, I do this because it gives me time to evaluate the game and the players. The fifteen minutes or so it takes to play the seven hands usually gives me enough time to get a general feel for the game I'm in..."
