A WORD FROM HENRY
Let me begin by wishing all our readers a Happy New Year!
Joe Pane recently attended the
2009 Blackjack Ball, an invitation-only annual
gathering of the casino's most feared blackjack players. In Pane's report you
will learn who won the coveted Blackjack Cup competition, who has been banned
from participating in the competition, and which blackjack player was voted
into the Blackjack Hall of Fame. Pane's report also includes the 21 Test
Questions given to the participants as part of the Blackjack Cup
competition (try answering them). If you haven't been to Reno lately
to play blackjack, you ought to consider doing so. Read LVBear's
excellent
Reno report, which summarizes the playing conditions in
and around Reno (don't miss reading this report!). If, on the other hand,
you're a low stakes card counter and you are
heading for Vegas, then
you definitely want to read LV21Pro's report that summarizes which
casinos in and around Vegas offer the best games for low-stakes counters.
Frank Scoblete and his team of reporters summarize the 2008 blackjack
highs and lows (mostly the latter) in
Atlantic City. But there is a
glimmer of hope: one casino is now offering only four-and
six-deck games, rather than the eight-deck games found elsewhere in town.
Have you wondered how many times you can expect to be
dealt
a favorable hand when you play blackjack? Alan Krigman has the
answer in his article this month. We have two excellent tournament
strategy articles this month: the first by
Kenneth Smith and the
second by Monkeysystem. The latter article also contains some
interesting information on how pro blackjack
tournament players make
"deals" amongst themselves so that one player has a piece of the
action of another player. Jean Scott took a cruise and reports on
an
interesting blackjack game that she came across on the high seas
which gave players the edge. Jerry Stickman continues his series
on dice control with Part 2 on
setting the dice. Finally,
Bill Burton gives
poker players some food for thought on how they can become better players in 2009.

"Reno and other parts of northern Nevada are different from most casino destinations throughout the world. By "Reno," I mean the general Reno area, including Lake Tahoe. I like Reno. Most employees are friendly. Most casino management still behaves as if it appreciates having customers. Comps are easy and generous. If you are accustomed to the hostility, rudeness, and mostly lousy games found throughout Las Vegas, Reno will be a pleasant surprise..."

"First off, don't expect to find many good low-stakes games on the Strip. Yes, there are some, but the minimum bets on these games are usually $50/$100 and up. The best games for low stakes counters are located in the local's casino..."

"In six-deck games, the likelihood of a favorable hand is 41.6 percent. In eight-deckers, the outlook declines slightly to 41.5 percent. The probabilities are broken out by the move dictated by Basic Strategy in the accompanying chart..."

"With apologies to Dorothy and Auntie Em, when we make the transition from regular blackjack to tournament blackjack, we're definitely not in Kansas anymore. We're in the tournament zone. Don't let yourself get too focused on the blackjack part of the game at the expense of the tournament part. Blackjack is just the mechanism we use to decide wins and losses. Tournament strategy is where the real action lies..."

"A little over a year ago my real-world career took me to a part of the country where blackjack tournaments don't exist - North Carolina. The nearest tournament venue for me was Atlantic City and I never made the eight-hour drive. I was in a financial bind, and didn't think I would be playing any blackjack tournaments for a while. Fortunately, I was wrong. Opportunity knocked a few times, and I'm very happy it did..."

"The BJ rules were pretty good for a ship casino. Although the shoe had eight decks, the dealers stood on a soft 17, you could double-down on any two cards, and you could split up to four hands and double down after pair splitting was allowed. This would make it a playable "social" game for small stakes, $5 and $10, even though it had a small negative expectation. However, a bonus provided by Treasure Island turned it into an exciting and slightly positive game..."

"Once you are sure you are keeping the dice on axis significantly better than a random roller, you might consider using the 3-V set. It is called the 3-V set because the two 3 faces form a V. A proper 3-V set will have nothing but 6's and 8's around the non-axis faces. Consequently, the 3-V set tends to produce more 6's and 8's than random..."
