Just in case you’ve been in a cave for the past ten years, the Facial Recognition System (e.g., Biometrica FRS) has the ability to scan facial features (via certain cameras located throughout the casino), and compare those features with similar faces in the casinos in-house or purchased/leased facial database. The feds used such a system at the 2001 Super Bowl. And what were their reported results? Read on. Though facial recognition is a great idea for national security, it still needs work to be 100 percent useful for a casino surveillance department. From what I’ve seen, researched, and been told, this system still requires a good, square face shot with no obstructions. Digital cameras make the system work even harder because the shot uses up way too much head space due to the colorful carpets and backgrounds when trying to get a grill shot of the suspect. In fact, about two years ago I was watching the Discovery Channel and saw this system being demonstrated at a casino in Las Vegas. They took a good facial picture of the Producer (while in the surveillance room) and added him to their database. They then sent him down stairs to play at a BJ table.
