TUNICA TRIP REPORT by Riverboat Flyer
Riverboat Flyer is a low-stakes blackjack player. He plays the southern Ohio riverboats along with frequent trips to Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Tunica, and occasionally Lake Tahoe. He has been counting cards for over ten years, using the Hi-Op, High Low and currently the half-count system. Casinos visited for this report: Gold Strike Horseshoe Hollywood Resorts Fitzgeralds Roadhouse Editor’s Note: I recommend at least a 1 to 8-10 aggressive betting spread for card counters playing a six-deck game and at least a 1 to 4-5 spread in a double-deck game in order to get a healthy advantage. Some low-stakes counters, including Riverboat Flyer, prefer a more conservative betting spread. This decreases the bankroll swings but at the expense of a lower edge over the house. Note: The playing observations mentioned in this report were made in December 2010. Day 1 It is the end of the year and time for my New Year’s trip to Tunica. There are four of us on this trip, Louie (my blackjack-playing buddy), our wives, and myself. After driving all day, we arrived at the Gold Strike Casino and had a nice dinner there. Now it is time for some serious playing. I am up for the year playing blackjack, but by the slimmest of margins. A bad session could put me in the red quickly. My first session at a six-deck shoe leaves me up $48. I was up and down like a yo-yo during the session. I finally quit after losing a double down while I was still ahead. I spread a modest $10 to $17.50, at a mostly full table. Day 2 This is our first full day in Tunica. I started playing at the Gold Strike, with an early morning session, at a $5 denomination, six-deck game. There were only three tables open. It turned out to be one of those frustrating sessions, where the dealer never seemed to break and kept hitting into three-, four-, and five-card 20s and 21s. The other two players had gone away losers. I foolishly hung in there, because I knew the cards did not know the dealer was hot and they would eventually turn my way. I did not last long enough to see them turn. I left after one and a half hours, down $196 (spreading from $5 to $20). I walked over to the Horseshoe to check out their blackjack games. They had $15 and $25 double-deck games, dealt down to about 0.8 decks. The $5 and $10 six-deck games had penetration down to one deck. I tried a $5, shoe game and my bad luck continued. An hour later, it was time for breakfast and I was down another $43, spreading $5 to $22.50. After breakfast, I was off to another of my favorite Tunica casinos, the... ...enter your member login information below to read this article/newsletter...
