PENNSYLVANIA TRIP REPORT: PRESQUE ISLE DOWNS AND CASINO

The first thing to know about Presque Isle Downs and Casino in Erie, Pa., is how to say the name. Presque – pronounced "presk" in these parts – is French for "almost." The casino borrows its name from nearby Presque Isle, a state park that is "almost an island." Experts call the park, which juts into Lake Erie, a "migrating" peninsula, with wind and water moving the sand eastward at the rate of a half-mile per century.

The casino, visible from Interstate 90, has easy access to Buffalo, N.Y., Cleveland and Pittsburgh. It’s just a couple of minutes from I-90’s Exit 27.

Presque Isle Casino is small. Even with a nine-table poker room that opened in October, it has just 52 gaming tables, the fewest among Pennsylvania’s 10 casinos. It has 2,070 slot machines, fewer than any other in the state except Philadelphia’s SugarHouse, which has 1,602.

As in many small casinos, the décor is utilitarian. Don’t look for architectural flourishes or fancy themes. The slots are laid out in aisles, with few, if any, curving walkways. The main table game pit, with about 14 blackjack tables, is near the player’s club booth.

Presque Isle is owned by MTR Gaming, which also operates Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort in Chester, W.Va. However, each has its own player’s card.
