Some craps bets are little known – even among avid craps enthusiasts. One such bet is called the Put bet. It combines the elements of a place bet with the ability to take odds. The Put bet is made right after the Point is established. You bet as if it is a Pass Line or Come bet that will pay even money but this bet can have Odds placed on it. For example, if the Point is 6 with double odds, you can bet $10 as the even-money portion and add $20 in Odds to the Put bet. The payoff will be $34 for your $30 wager. The house edge is 3.03 percent; an expected loss of $3.03 per $100 wagered. You can also use the Put bets on the Come during the point-cycle of the game. Let’s go step-by-step on how to make a Put bet (which is made on the Pass Line). After the shooter has established his point, you place a flat bet (say $10) on the (Pass) line and next to it, the odds you wish to take, and now you say to the dealer, "Put bet with odds." Either you or the dealer will then put the Put bet on the inner line of the Pass line area, and the odds bet will go on top of the Put bet (just like a Come bet on a number). If the Put bet wins (when the shooter throws the number before a 7), the bet will be paid off just like a Pass Line bet. The "line bet" part of the Put bet will be paid at even money (that’s your $10), and the odds bet part of the Put bet will be paid off correctly at true odds. If you wish to continue to use Put bets, you can then do so on the Come. The Odds a casino allows on a Put bet will determine whether it is worth making. Check the chart below, which summarizes the house edge on the Put bets for 4/10, 5/9, and 6/8 at different odds allowed by the casino. Although some Put bets come in with some good edges – better than the Place house edges at times – they are never as good as Pass Line or Come bets with the same odds. The bets in bold are decent Put wagers to make.
In my over two decades of craps play – and I have played a lot – I think I’ve seen only two players use the Put bets as their main method of wagering. If you want to make any of the decent Put bets highlighted above, keep this in mind: Not every casino will allow Put bets, and there are even some dealers who have never heard of the bet. However, if your local casino allows Put bets (just ask the dealer), you ought to consider making this bet (especially on the 6/8) at the odds listed above where the house edge is 1.82% or less.
