Last month, I reviewed Triple Deuces video poker games. Of all wild card video poker games, the deuces wild category is by far the largest. Countless variations of pay tables provide a nearly limitless selection of deuces wild games for the video poker player. Helping to add to the popularity of deuces wild games are dozens of different cool sounding names such as Loose Deuces, Downtown Deuces, Big Split Poker Deuces Wild, Colorado Deuces, Airport Deuces, and Illinois Deuces. Even the term deuce is given the colloquial moniker of "duck." Rather than just call a short-pay schedule "a short-pay schedule" they have been given catchy nicknames; Not So Ugly Ducks and Ugly Ducks are examples. This month I will review two versions of "Deuces Wild Bonus Poker" video poker. Deuces Wild Bonus Poker Deuces Wild Bonus Poker adds a bonus for four deuces with an ace kicker and five-of-a-kinds. A hand of four deuces with an ace kicker pays double the normal four deuces at 400-for-1 rather than 200-for-1. Rather than one pay rate for any five-of-a-kind, the pay varies by rank. Five aces pay 80-for-1, five 3’s, 4’s, or 5’s pay 40-for-1 and five 6’s through kings pay 20-for-1. The higher pays for certain hands comes with a price. Pays for lower hands such as flush and straight are reduced. Variance increases to about 32 from about 25, and the strategy becomes more complex since there are more combinations that win. Two different Deuces Wild Bonus variations will be reviewed in this article; the full-pay (99.45 percent) and a short-pay (98.80 percent). The complete full pay table information follows. Notice that the pay table is represented by 25/9/4/4, using the pays for the Wild Royal Flush, Straight Flush, Four-of-a-Kind and Full House. This is because the pays for five-of-a-kinds do not normally change, although it is always a good practice to verify every line of the pay table before considering play on the chosen game.
As mentioned above, strategy for this game becomes more complex because of the additional higher pays and the variance goes up for the same reason. Here is the simplified strategy for the full-pay (25/9/4/4) version of Deuces Wild Bonus Poker.
Short-Pay Deuces Wild Bonus Poker The common short-pay version of Deuces Wild Bonus Poker has a 25/13/4/3 pay table. Notice that the pay for a straight flush improves considerably to 13-for-1 from 9-for-1 but the pay for a full house is reduced to 3-for-1 from 4-for-1. The reduction of one credit for the full house is more than enough to offset the increased pay for the straight flush, reducing the overall return to 98.80 percent. The variance is slightly reduced to 32.1 from 32.7.
