In previous issues of BJI, I reviewed Double Deuces video poker games. Of all wild card video poker games, the deuces wild category is by far the largest. Countless variations of pay tables provide a nearly limitless selection of deuces wild games for the video poker player. Helping to add to the popularity of deuces wild games are dozens of different cool sounding names such as Loose Deuces, Downtown Deuces, Big Split Poker Deuces Wild, Colorado Deuces, Airport Deuces, and Illinois Deuces. Even the term deuce is given the colloquial moniker of "duck". Rather than just call a short-pay schedule "a short-pay schedule" they have been given catchy nicknames; Not So Ugly Ducks and Ugly Ducks are examples. This month I will review "Triple Deuces" video poker. Triple Deuces Poker As with Double Deuces Poker, the name tells it all. Triple Deuces Poker pays triple the Deuces Wild pay for four deuces – 600-for-1 instead of 200-for-1. Along with some changes to lesser paying hands, the only version of Triple Deuces Poker reviewed in this article is the full-pay version returning 99.92 percent with perfect play. The reason for no short-pay versions is the variance. With so much of the return concentrated in two rare hands, the variance soars to 96.5 – very, very high. Getting anything less than nearly 100 percent just is not worth the bankroll swings. The complete pay table information follows.
By looking at the % Return column, it is easy to see why the variance is so high. Over 15 percent of the return is tied up in the natural royal flush and four deuces. That means while you are playing and not getting these high impact hands, you are playing at a 15 percent house edge. 15 dollars of every 100 you run through this game is not returned until you hit a royal flush or four deuces. If you play at fairly slow 400 hands per hour on a quarter game, you will lose 75 dollars an hour. With that in mind, the strategy is listed below.
With much more return centered on just two hands, the strategy becomes simplified. If this were a positive expectation game (more than 100 percent return), it would be a decent game to play. As it is, however, I consider it marginal because of the high variance. If that doesn’t bother you, then this is a great game to play. It is even better if you get slot club points for play as even a .1 (one tenth) percent slot club bonus puts this game in positive territory. As stated in the beginning of the article, there are dozens of different pay tables for Deuces Wild Poker. The game explored in this article is a decent version to play. It has a great return, though it also has high variance. The strategy is fairly straight-forward. When searching for a Deuces Wild game you must look at virtually the entire pay table as changes can – and usually are – made to almost all of the pays. Some versions may have a high return but also a high variance if the concentrate the returns in a few very high paying hands. Just be careful that you select a proper game to play and make sure you have the strategy for the game you select. Deuces Wild Poker can be a lot of fun and profitable if done right. Next month I will look at more deuces wild games. More detailed information on Triple Deuces as well as dozens of additional video poker games is available in Frank Scoblete’s and Jerry "Stickman’s" book "Everything Casino Poker: Get the Edge at Video Poker, Texas Hold’em, Omaha Hi-Lo and Pai Gow Poker." It is available on Amazon.com. Until next time. All the best in your casino and life endeavors. Jerry "Stickman"
