LAS VEGAS BLACKJACK REPORT: GOLD COAST CASINO

by KC Brooks

I have been addicted to blackjack ever since reading Revere’s "Playing Blackjack as a Business" when I was 15. The art of blackjack is a lifetime endeavor. I went through the learning process backwards, learning Revere’s Advanced Point Count first. I found out early that the actual count system is only a small piece of the puzzle. Presently, I travel "my" Devils Triangle (Reno, Wendover, Vegas}, playing mainly single- and double-deck games. Hi Lo is my choice of strategies and "Professional Blackjack" by Wong is my bible. I worship a large spread, and have been known to wong everywhere I go. Thank God I haven’t had to register as a wonger yet, but I am sure it is not too far off. I also help fellow AP Nick teach card counting at www.Blackjackclassroom.com.

This is the conclusion of my journey exploring the casinos on or around Flamingo Road. (For Parts 1, 2, 3, and 4 of this series, see BJI 172, 173, 174 and 175.)

GOLD COAST CASINO (4000 W. Flamingo Rd.)

Our visit to the casinos on Flamingo Road finally comes to an end this month, with a trip to The Gold Coast Hotel and Casino. Gold Coast is located west of Las Vegas Boulevard, next to the Rio and across the street from the Palms.

The Gold Coast has been around since 1986. There are 711 rooms in the hotel, they have a swimming pool and spa, and for those non-gambling patrons, they also have a 70-lane bowling center. The frontier-style exterior gives the appearance that the Gold Coast has been around since the turn of the century. Upon entering the property, you immediately get that classic gambling-hall feel.

The 120,000 square foot casino contains 2100 of the most popular slot and video poker machines around, and a 720 seat Bingo hall. The table games offered at the Gold Coast include Blackjack, Caribbean Stud Poker, Craps, Keno, Pai Gow Poker, Roulette, Let it Ride, Baccarat, Megabucks, and Super Megabucks.

Dining options include two excellent Asian restaurants, The Noodle Exchange, and Ping Pang Pong. There is also a T.G.I Friday’s and the Cortez Room, which is a fine-dining steakhouse. Ports O’ Call buffet, Subway, and Java Vegas Coffee are other food destinations available at the Gold Coast. I would like to point out that Chinatown, which is on Spring Mountain, is only a couple of miles from the Gold Coast. If you are an Asian food fanatic (which I am), the quality of food, and the pricing, can’t be beat. I definitely recommend checking out Chinatown.

There are three craps tables at the Gold Coast, which offer 3x4x5x odds, and $5-$2000 betting limits. Scattered throughout the gaming area, are four roulette wheels. As for the blackjack games...
