STICKMAN’S STANCE: PLAYING SHOCKWAVE VIDEO POKER

stickmanjerry@aol.com.Last month I reviewed Pick ‘Em/Pick A Pair video poker. This month we switch to another type of video poker game, Shockwave Poker.
Shockwave video poker is a unique style of Jacks or Better video poker. There are two different modes of play. The normal mode accounts for well over 90 percent of play. The game operates in normal mode, until four-of-a-kind hits. It then switches to "Shockwave" mode for ten plays or until another four-of-a-kind, whichever happens first. In Shockwave mode, a four-of-a-kind pays the same as a royal flush. The complete pay table information for the 12/8/5 (12-for-1 for a full house, 8-for-1 for a flush and 5-for-1 for a straight) full-pay version is below.

There are three different pay tables; one for normal mode, one for shockwave mode and a combined pay table. Notice the very high return and astronomical variance for shockwave mode. However, the game is only in shockwave mode for about 9.8 plays, so the impact on the combined pay table is minor.
