In last months issue of BJI, I wrote about knowing where you are at all times in a casino before you sit down and play because the blackjack playing rules and conditions that you might find in one pit may be totally different and sometimes better than you’ll find in another pit. So "knowing where you are in a casino" is extremely important to get the most value for your gambling dollar.

It’s the same with blackjack tournaments. In fact it’s even more important that you know where you’re at because, unlike live table games, once you have selected your tournament seating position you can not get up and leave. You are stuck in that seat until you either bust out or finish the round.

Your game plan should begin even before you register for the tournament. Make sure you understand the format for the tournament and specifically how they assign table seating position and which player bets first. For example, will they roll a die to find out which player will start the betting? Often this is the case but in some tournaments the betting starts from seat position #1 (first base player). If the latter is the case your seat selection becomes very important.
