FROM THE INSIDE

TIPS FOR NOVICE & ADVANCE COUNTERS

By The Suit

I have dealt everywhere from the "Sweat Houses" to the clubs owned by the "Good Old Boys." In Old Las Vegas, you HAD to know game protection before you got promoted to the floor. I spent the last 14 years as Floor Supervisor, Pit Manager, Director of a Gaming School, Back Up Shift Manager, and Shift Manager. I’ve trained dealers, Floor Supervisors and Pit Managers. Needless to say, I have experienced gaming from all positions in Table Games and have told some of the BEST advantage players in the world that they could not play. I will give you tips on how to avoid getting the dreaded "Tap on the Shoulder."

There are many card counting systems available to players. These systems are usually grouped by levels, with the level of the system being the highest value any card is assigned in the system. Examples of level one systems include Brawn’s +/-, KO, HiOp I, Red Seven, Revere Advanced+/-, ITA Systems, DHM (Gordon), and Uston Advanced +/-. Level two systems include, HiOp II, Omega II, and Revere PC. A Level three system is Uston APC, and the level four systems are Ultimate Count, Revere APC-71, and the Revere APC-73. Also, a level nine system is the Ten Count and level eleven is Thorp Ultimate. So as you can see there’s a lot out there for you to research.

My recommendation is that if you want to learn how to be an excellent card counter you need to learn a system that is easy for you to understand and use. If you’re going to be playing multiple deck games dealt from shoes than learn a simple level one +/-. If you want more accuracy playing your hands based on the count then learn HiOp II, Omega II, Revere APC-73 or Uston APC. The latter all have excellent indices but be forewarned it will take you a very long time to master these systems. If you are a novice counter, my advice is to keep it simple and learn a level one system with the Illustrious 18 indices.

Below is a Count System Efficiency Chart, for your information. The Betting Efficiency is how close the counting system is to a perfect betting count. The Playing Efficiency is how close the system is to a perfect playing system.
