MY EXPERIENCES IN THE 2005 WORLD SERIES OF BLACKJACK By Rick "Cowboy" Jensen Rick "Cowboy" Jensen (from Texas, naturally) has been operating his own casino company since 1985. He first started playing in blackjack tournaments in August of 1985. In 2000 he started his own tournament company and is currently planning the Blackjack Tournament Cruise this coming October. Go to http://www.blackjackcruises.com for more details on the cruise and the four major tournaments on board. Getting selected as a contestant for GSN's World Series of Blackjack 2005 was great, what else can I say? This is the only tournament where you are paid to play (you were guaranteed to win $500 even if you finished dead last in your first round) plus you also had the chance to win a quarter of a million dollars.
How I got on the show. Once I found out about the WSOB II tournament, I sent an application to GSN to become a contestant. A few weeks later I received a call from them that they wanted to do a phone interview and also to send in a current photograph of me (which I did). About a week and half after the phone interview, they called and told me I was selected to be one of the 40 contestants for the show.
Just by being selected I won a minimum of $500, a free stay at the Golden Nugget hotel/casino, and food comped for the week. Not bad and I haven't even played a hand of blackjack yet! Life is good and it could only get better.
Check-In When I arrived at the Golden Nugget, I checked in with the GSN staff (which, by the way, were all great). I also checked-out the set they had constructed for the tournament and saw all the cameras. That’s when it finally hit me. I was about to be on TV playing in front of thousands if not millions of people. I started thinking about last years WSOB Tournament and how everybody (including me) critiqued the players and how we ripped them when they screwed up. Can you say stage fright...LOL.
