Editor’s Note: Max Rubin, the perennial host of the annual Blackjack Ball was kind enough to provide me with a summary of the 2007 Ball held last week in Las Vegas. For those that don’t know, the annual Blackjack Ball is a social gathering of invited blackjack pros from around the world. Rubin estimates that collectively the guests at the Ball "easily earn at least $ 10 million a year playing cards." The only obligation for invited guests to get past security at the door is to bring one chilled bottle of premium Champagne (ideally one that they acquired solely from a casino comp). The evening consists of dinner, drinks, storytelling (of course), a Calcutta where guests wager on and against each other in the skills test (the winner receives the Blackjack Cup and the coveted title of "World’s Best Blackjack Player"), the infamous Blackjack Test, and the voting to determine which blackjack luminary joins the Blackjack Hall of Fame.
Summary of 2007 Blackjack Ball Number of attendees: 88 Blackjack Ball Test: The top two scores with 13 correct answers was achieved by James Grosjean and Russ Hamilton. There were four other attendees tied with 12 correct answers. Others making it to the final competition for the Blackjack Cup were Johnny Chang, Bob Nersesian, and Pete the Grinder (Kim Lee was the odd man out). Winner of the Blackjack Cup: James Grosjean (who bested Russ Hamilton on the last hand, who in turn had edged out Johnny Chang) New Inductee voted into the Blackjack Hall of Fame: Johnny Chang The Blackjack Ball Test This is the test that guests took as part of the Blackjack Cup competition. You only have 20 or so seconds to jot down the answer to each question. You can’t use a calculator or other aid. In next months BJI, I’ll provide the answers.
