THE $57,000 TOURNAMENT LESSON

Joe Pane is a skilled advantage blackjack player and an experienced tournament player who has won over half a million dollars in blackjack tournaments in icluding his recent first place finish at the IP in Biloxi. Besides competing in tournaments around the country and on the Internet, Joe writes the "House of Pane" column for "All In Blackjack" magazine and was recently hired by the Ultimate Blackjack Tour (UBT) as the Assistant Director of Tour Operations as well as the Team UBT Coordinator. His peers consider him to be one of the strongest blackjack tournament players on the circuit.
My loyal readers know very well that my ability to play in tournaments, outside of the UBT Tour, is limited because of my playing skills. Therefore, I decided to mentor some players to help them improve their game, both on line and in live brick ‘n mortar blackjack tournaments to a point that it now allows them the chance to play and compete on a level with some of the best tournament players around. In fact, one of my recent students has taken her online tournament game to a level that allows her to play night after night on Bet21.com with an edge, and she has also become a formidable player in live blackjack tournaments.
Sweetteabird (her handle when she plays on line) came within one card of winning the Barona Tournament, a $50,000 first prize package, and a free $10,000 seat in this December’s Championship TOC event that includes a guaranteed one million dollars to the winner. Unfortunately, she finished second when the dealer’s 20 beat her 19 and top tournament player Adriana Jade’s 20 pushed (which allowed her to win the tournament). That was a tough break for Sweetteabird, but nevertheless a fine showing in only her second live tournament play to date.
Undaunted, Sweetteabird entered another live tournament, this time the Venetian UBT Tour stop, and would you believe, again came within one card of making it to another final table.
Sweetteabird obviously took the lessons that I taught her very seriously and she used her knew skills in her first four live tournaments to compete against some of the best tournament players, who travel around the country to play these events. That’s quite an accomplishment.
Most of my tournament colleagues think I’m crazy to teach other players to improve their game at such a rapid pace because there is always the possibility that one day I might be facing them at a final table. And then what am I gonna do?...
