Readers Q&A #9

Dear BJInsider.com Expert Guide,

The following question was asked by

---------------------------------
Is there a basic stragedy for more than 2 cards? Like, I get a 2,6, dealer shows 7 so I hit and now have 2,6,5. Now what? Do i keep using Basic Stragedy or is there a 3 card stragedy somewhere I can study?

Best regards,
The "Ask the Pro" Staff

Dear Frank,

Just keep using the basic strategy on 3 (or more card) hands like you would with 2 card hands. One change you can make is if your 3 (or more) card hand contains any 4’s or 5’s then stand on hard 16 when the dealer shows a 10. There are also several more changes for 3 or more card hands summarized on Michael Shackelford’s web site www.wizardofodds.com (in appendix 3a & 3b in the blackjack section).

Dear BJInsider.com Expert Guide,

The following question was asked by

---------------------------------
I love BJ but, I only have one place to play, a mississippi riverboat. I don't know if it's worth the effort or not.
I'll give you the situtation and please tell me what you think. 6 deck, dealer Hs17. are the only bad rules. The only good rule is das and double on any two cards. $5.00 min.
The penetration is usually 4 1/2 decks. I play Hi-Op I & usuall spread 1-5
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Catfish

PS I haven't been able to beat them but I haven't lost much either in about 200 hours playing time.

Dear Catfish,

I would suggest you switch to the High Low counting system rather then Hi Opt 1 because the High Low has a better betting efficiency which is important for multiple deck games. Also your betting spread is a little weak for the game you are playing. You should spread from 1 unit to at least 8 units. If you can backcount and jump in when the count is positive and leave (or take a break) when it is very negative it will also help your win rate.

Dear BJInsider.com Expert Guide,

The following question was asked by

---------------------------------
what do you think of the core system in blackjack by scott frank?
---------------------------------

Best regards,
The "Ask the Pro" Staff

Dear Taffy,

The computer studies that I have seen on the core system, which were published in John May’s book Get the Edge at Blackjack, shows that the system has a betting efficiency of 0.63 I don’t consider that very good especially when the simple KO count or High Low count has a betting efficiency much higher (0.98 and 0.97). I also don’t think the KO and High low are that difficult to learn. My advice is to learn the KO count which is the simplest beginning level count with a very powerful betting efficiency.

Dear BJInsider.com Expert Guide,

The following question was asked by

---------------------------------
how can you be sure blackjack on the web is not fixed? bobyt
---------------------------------

Best regards,
The "Ask the Pro" Staff

Dear Bobyt,

It’s hard to tell that’s why you should only play blackjack on sites that use name brand software anmd have professional servies (like 24 hour telephone customer support). You could do statistical sampling but this isn't easy (see the book BeatWebBJInsider.com by Haley for details). My advice is to check out the reviews of different internet sites summarized on www.wizardofodds.com and www.gamemasteronline.com and play only sites which received a high rating.

Dear BJInsider.com Expert Guide,

The following question was asked by

---------------------------------
I am going to Las Vegas in October.
I would like to enter a Blackjack Tournament.
Do you know of any casinos in or around the Las Vegas area that are having any that time of year.
Thanks
---------------------------------

Best regards,
The "Ask the Pro" Staff

Dear Mrlizotte,

At the moment I don’t know of any major blackjack tournaments but that’s probably because the casinos haven’t sent out their press release announcing the tournament. We’ll probably get information on Oct blackjack tournaments around May and as soon as we do we will post it on our Blackjack Insider Newsletter (www.BJInsider.com). See also the listing of minor weekly tournaments in the newsletter.
