BJI Newsletter, July 2017, #210

Read this issue as a single web page

An announcement from Henry

I have decided to retire at the end of this year. It will be business as usual with the BJI until then, and my business partner Dan Pronovost and I will continue to publish our regular monthly issues for the remainder of the year. (Our last issue will be December 2017.)

I have enjoyed organizing and editing over 200 issues of the BJI (containing more than 1,000 articles and reports) these past 15 years, and I want to thank you for supporting me along this journey. My goal has always been to make our subscribers smarter players; I hope I have met your expectations in this regards. I also want to thank the cadre of over 40 writers who have contributed their expertise to the BJI. Without their support, the newsletter would have never survived.

A WORD FROM DAN

Henry and I have been business partners now for 16 years, publishing the Blackjack Insider together every month, since 2001. Henry has been an outstanding editor, and I am truly honoured to have had the privilege of working with such a knowledgeable, skilled and down-right likeable casino advantage player and expert as Henry.

Henry and I have done so much more together than just the BJI. We've published eight e-books on advantage gambling topics from a variety of authors on blackjack, casino surveillance and tournament play... which still sell well to this day! It was Henry that encouraged me in 2002 to think about an easier way to count cards, based on our experience of how hard a skill it is to learn and master advanced systems like High-Low. The end result of that collaboration was Speed Count, a much easier proven card counting system that still delivers a good edge. Henry and I brought this to the public through our courses, and the Golden Touch Blackjack Revolution! book. And of course, month in and month out, I looked forward to receiving all the articles for the monthly BJI, and finding out all the amazing content Henry managed to collect through his vast network of advantage gambling domain experts.

Please join me in offering Henry the best in his retirement. I know he'll be spending more time with his grandkids at the ball diamond, and enjoying life with his family! If you want to write us and tell us your thoughts and experiences with the Blacjkack Insider over the many years of our publication, please feel free to do so: info@bjinsider.com.

I'm sure all our readers and subscribers have a lot of questions about the future of Blackjack Insider, and how this change will unfold. We have decided to let our readers know about these changes six months in advance:

  • July 2017: inform the public about the decision to end regular monthly publications of the Blackjack Insider at the end of 2017 (December 2017 will be our last issue).
  • September 2017: we will continue to accept paid subscriptions to the BJI until the end of September 2017, with notice that the last new issue will be published at the end of this year.
  • October 2017: from October 2017 onward, there will be no purchases or renewals of paid BJI memberships. Access to members-only articles will continue to be reserved for paid members until October 2018.
  • December 2017: last regular monthly publication of the BJI.
  • 2018 and Beyond: The Blackjack Insider web site will remain open and available for all subscribers and readers. Our e-books and digital download software will remain available in the BJI online store, but some physical goods items will be removed. Past content will continue to be available. We may have infrequent small publications of the BJI from time to time, as Henry continues to write an article of interest here and there. But, there will be no further paid member content. At some point, paid members-only articles may be made open and public, but that has not yet been determined.

A WORD FROM HENRY

Our July issue has several blackjack reports: Binion's and Four Queens casinos in Las Vegas (by Stu D. Hoss); Eastside Cannery casino in Las Vegas (by KC Brooks); and two casinos located in Lawrenceburg, IN (by "JPB"). If you are not sure what you should do if you spot a dealer mistake, check out the tips by Ariande. Edge sorting is a technique used by pros to gain an advantage at casino card games. Former MIT player Nicholas Colon explains what it is, and summarizes the saga of poker pro Phil Ivey's lawsuit against several casinos for not paying him millions that he won using this technique playing baccarat. Paul Wilson has written one of the most comprehensive reports on paid self-parking in Strip casinos, and offers numerous tips on how to avoid the parking fees. (If you are planning a trip to Vegas, don't miss reading this article.) The vast majority of advantage blackjack players have learned how to get the advantage at video poker (including me), and in my article this month I'll explain why. Dunbar explains the advantages of playing a multi-line vs single-line video poker game, while Jerry "Stickman" explains how to play the popular single or multi-line Super Times Pay video poker game. (This is one of the most comprehensive articles on this game.) John Grochowski answers the following questions from players: what are the best video poker games to play if your casino doesn't offer Jacks or Better; a new blackjack game where you must play three hands at once; and whether it is correct to always hold one pair when dealt two pairs in Deuces Wild.

Enjoy the issue,

INTRODUCTION TO ADVANTAGE VIDEO POKER by Skip Hughes

This article by the late Skip Hughes describes how you gain the advantage playing video poker. It appeared in issue #78 of BJI (2008) and the information and strategies it contains is just as valid today as it was back then. (With two exceptions: Skip mentions the database vpinsider.com; this has been replaced by www.vpfree2.com as the "go to" site for finding out which casinos in different areas of the country offer the best video poker games, and there are newer video poker training software than the ones mentioned by Skip, specifically Video Poker for Winners and Optimum Video Poker.
