Blackjack Insider Newsletter, August 2005, #67

A WORD FROM HENRY

On my recent trip to Vegas, the temperature hit a record breaking 117 degrees! Yes, it's summer and it's a hot one. So kick back, relax, and cool off with this issue of the BJI. We begin with LV Pro's inside story on how two local players are trying to get a Las Vegas casino to sponsor a new two million dollar blackjack tournament (casino politics are wild). Hal Marcus describes what happens when a friend uses his Counters Basic Strategy (CBS) while playing for mid-stakes in a Las Vegas casino (if you don't know about CBS, you should). Our resident blackjack pro, Barfarkel, offers ten tips to low stakes card counters who want to be successful at card counting (Barfarkel's first non-trip report in BJI and it's a good one). The Low Roller visited Casino Row in Biloxi, MS and reports on blackjack (and video poker) playing conditions there (I play in Biloxi part time). In his Atlantic City BJ Report, Frank gives the link to his article that describes one of the most remarkable events in the history of craps that occurred last month. His 83 years young craps mentor and dice controller extraordinaire, The Captain, held the dice for a remarkable 2 hours and 18 minutes and rolled a mind boggling 147 numbers before sevening out (even if you are not a craps shooter, you'll enjoy reading this article). Speaking of craps, Dan Pronovost reports on the analysis of several of Scoblete's own monster rolls in his article on hand length (yes, Frank's dice control skills stand up to statistical scrutiny!). As most of you know, Kenny Einiger won the World Series of Blackjack and we are delighted that Kenny is contributing to the BJI with his article on the Etiquette of Tournament Blackjack (great read for tournament newbies). Tournament pro Kenny Smith also offers advice on the importance of Knowing Your Opponent when you play in tournaments (excellent advice I might add). Our resident poker pro, Bill Burton, reviews the new Poker 6·7·8 Hold'em Strategy Cards (if you play poker, you definitely want to read about these new strategy cards) and last, but not least, Kenny Smith summarizes some of the upcoming blackjack tournaments.

In July, I was a guest on Kenny Einiger and Joe Pane's new radio show, "Be in Action," on KLAV 1230 AM in Las Vegas. The show is aired live on Thursday evening from 6pm to 7pm PST. However, you can listen to their show on the internet at www.klav1230am.com/lowbandwith/liveonair.htm (show is repeated on Saturday afternoon at 4pm PST). Kenny and Joe have had several top notch guests from the world of blackjack and poker (Kenny Smith, Anthony Curtis and Russ Hamilton) with more celebrities to follow. On Thursday evening you can call-in and ask questions. Check it out-you will enjoy the show.

In the next few months I'll be busy teaching Speed Count in Chicago (Aug. 13 and 14), Las Vegas (Sept. 17 and 18) and Tunica (Nov. 12 and 13). In just one weekend of hands-on training (Speed Count is that easy to learn), you will be able to play blackjack with an advantage over the house. THE LONG & WINDING ROAD OF THE NEW 2 MILLION DOLLAR TOURNAMENT by LV Tournament Pro

"As I write this article, the much anticipated meeting to finalize all of the details of the new and exciting 2 Million Dollar Tournament in Las Vegas is less than 72 hours away. First, I want to personally thank Joe Pane and Kenny Einiger, who without their help and hard work, this article and hopefully this tournament could not have been completed as they have provided me with a time line and valuable insider's information including all the obstacles that have been thrown in front of them during the process of negotiating this tournament with different casino operators..."

COUNTER BASIC STRATEGY-REAL WORLD TEST by Hal Marcus

"A friend of mine (Tim) recently played blackjack using my Counter Basic Strategy at the Las Vegas Strip casino where he was also staying. Tim played at a 6-deck shoe betting from $25 to $400 per hand, depending on the count. In the first 20 minutes of play, Tim noticed the pit boss observing his play, yet he still placed bets according to the count..."

TOP 10 TIPS FOR LOW STAKES COUNTERS by Barfarkel (a.k.a. LV Pro)

"Tip #1. Always seek out the games with the best cut you can find. Penetration is and always will be the key factor in choosing a game. Don't just settle for the lousy cut game in front of you because it's convenient. Get off your duff and go out and find a better game. Here's what to look for..."

ATLANTIC CITY BLACKJACK REPORT by Alene Paone and Frank Scoblete

"The greatest event in modern craps play took place in Atlantic City in July, witnessed by Frank Scoblete and Kenneth Frasca. Just dream about how much money you would have made had you been on that roll!..."

HAND LENGTHS IN CRAPS: A CLOSER LOOK AT MONSTER ROLLS by Dan Pronovost

"Initially, Frank e-mailed me the innocent question, "Here are six hand lengths: 50, 52, 55, 57, 60 and 89. Would this shooter be the same as a random shooter with these hands?" I analysed Frank's long rolls using my Smart Craps software and was surprised at the results..."

TOURNAMENT BLACKJACK STRATEGY: KNOW YOUR OPPONENT by Kenneth Smith

"No matter what the game, it pays to know your competition. Knowing what to expect from your opponents gives you extra information to use in the battle. That's as true in gambling as it is in sports. No-limit Texas Hold'em is the obvious example, where the game is more about the personalities at the table than the cards that are dealt. While tournament blackjack doesn't have much of a bluffing element, that doesn't mean that information about your competitors isn't valuable. On the contrary, if you aren't paying attention to the play of your adversaries, you're probably not winning as often as you could..."
