Blackjack Insider Newsletter, August 2006, #79

We begin this issue of the BJI with an excerpt from the exciting new book, Beat The Players - Casinos, Cops, and the Game Inside The Game by Bob Nersesian, an attorney who represents victims of casino wrong doing against patrons. The accounts of player abuse in the book are unbelievable but true. This book should be required reading by anyone who sets foot in a casino, especially advantage players (the book is available at a 10% discount to BJI subscribers in our online store: click here). The schedule for the first stops in the Ultimate Blackjack Tour (UBT) has been finalized and LV Tournament Pro has the details. Our mid-west reporter, JPB, made his first trip to Tunica, and reports on blackjack playing conditions there. Frank Scoblete provides the latest blackjack conditions in Atlantic City and Alene Paone summarizes the results of the recently held World Craps Championships™ (I had the opportunity to attend and it was a blast). Barfarkel's Part 2 trip report to Sin City covers a lot of ground and a lot of casinos as he tried to recoup his losses. Monkeysytem, an experienced blackjack tournament player, mentors a newbie prior to his first tournament with a surprising result. Kenneth Smith takes a closer look at a few interesting decisions that arose during his round in the televised World Series of Blackjack. Million dollar tournament winner Sammy Vaughn tells some tales about several interesting characters from the world of tournament blackjack Poker pro Bill Burton explains which poker games you should pick to play, and why. And last but not least, we have a summary of upcoming blackjack tournaments courtesy of

Congratulations to BJI writer, Linda "Lowroller" Mabry, for winning the first World Craps Championship™. You can read about her accomplishment in Alene Paone's report. The August issue of Casino Player magazine features Part 2 of an interview with two of our famous BJI writers, Ken Smith and Joe Pane. You'll find more tournament playing tips in the article so don't miss reading it (you can subscribe to Casino Player at our special negotiated 10% BJI discount - click here for details).

Based on a suggestion from a BJI subscriber, we've included more details about blackjack table conditions in our Reports. At the beginning of each Report, we've also listed the casinos covered in the Report and highlighted the name of the casino in the body of the Report to make it easier to find.

BJI writer Kenny Smith and I will be playing in the $125,000 Gold Strike Blackjack Tournament in Tunica the weekend of August 5 and 6. If you are planning to be in Tunica that weekend, stop by and say Hi.

Due to some very recent changes in 2-deck games in Las Vegas (that occurred after I left town), I decided to postpone my article until I can verify the changes.

"With the advent of the UBT, which is the brainchild of Russ Hamilton (the 1994 WSOP Champion), the issue of boring blackjack tournaments is over. UBT offers an exciting, non-stop, action game in every round of play that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats as they watch players go all-in to prevent from being eliminated. With the UBT format, players are forced to sink or swim from the very first hand to the last..."

"Nevada hates you, and merely tolerates you as a cost of doing business. While this is not news, many readers of this book suffered under some of the events described below. Professional advantage gamblers, and sometimes gamblers who are merely skilled or lucky, incur rousting, jailing, slander, handcuffing, and banishment for merely plying their legal trade or sometimes just enjoying a night out. This book presents a primer on what to expect, and suggests some courses of action when faced with the overreaching of the casinos..."

"While playing blackjack seriously as an advantage player since 1996, I have managed to visit most of the major and some obscure gaming destinations in the US but I had never made it to Tunica, Mississippi until now. I found the Tunica blackjack to be very good - one of the few remaining locations with more than just a token real single deck game..."

"Frank Scoblete's World Craps Championships TM brought 167 players from around the country to Las Vegas on the weekend of July 22 and 23 to participate in the first non-casino craps tournaments ever held. There were 10 tournaments spread out over two days - all of them head-to-head matches, based on dice rolling skills, with the winner of each match advancing to the next round. Each tournament had 96 players competing for first, second, and third place trophies and cash prizes..."

LAS VEGAS TRIP REPORT - Part 2 (May 2006) by Barfarkel

"I drove next door to the Suncoast and got my baseball cap out of the trunk. I didn't think they'd remember me from a few years ago when they had three security guards escort me out of the casino and also had a security vehicle follow me to my car and note my license number. Still, I knew Swing was their most intolerant shift, and I wanted to generate as little attention as possible..."

"I like telling people about my hobby, which is playing in blackjack tournaments. Most of my friends and coworkers listen with interest, but would probably not be interested enough to travel to play one themselves. After all, the nearest casino to my home that offers tournaments is a two hour drive away, so only the most dedicated and/or interested person would make the journey for a shot at a $1,000 first prize. My enthusiasm for blackjack tournaments must've been contagious enough for one of my coworkers, however, because he expressed an interest in traveling with me to try it. I eagerly brought him along..."

"I entered my first blackjack tournament in 1989 at the Four Queens and won a whopping fifty grand! The in 2004 I lost a million bucks in a blackjack tournament. I was leading after 25 hands but then my luck soured and bye-bye went the million. Unfortunately for me, they put that tournament on TV, showing the agony of my defeat. But don't feel sorry for me. I came back in a big way and won - are you ready for this - a million bucks..."

"You walk into the poker room and find there are seats open at two tables with the limits you want to play at. Sitting at table number one is Doyle Brunson, Daniel Negreanu and Annie Duke. Seated at table number two is Mickey Maniac, Ricky Rock and Carrie Callingstation. Which game would you pick to sit down in..."
